A DRUNKEN Worksop man broke a police officer’s wrist after being arrested for disorderly behaviour.
Matthew Morris, who had shouted abuse at police, was agitated and had to be restrained, Chesterfield magistrates heard.
He was taken to Chesterfield police station where he twisted PC Gareth Buxton’s left wrist, causing a loud, cracking noise.
“Three officers restrained him during a violent struggle in a cell and a second handcuff was applied. An x-ray showed a fracture to PC Buxton’s wrist,” said Sarah Haslam, prosecuting.
“The officer had no mobility in his left hand due to pain and swelling and he could not do simple tasks or drive.”
Morris, 41, of Ely Close, Worksop, denied the assault on 1st June. But he was convicted after failing to attend his trial.
Sentence was adjourned until 22nd October for probation service reports and he may be given help with his drink problem.
“There was a scuffle in the holding area at the police station that lasted no more than ten seconds,” said John Wilford, for Morris
“He caused an injury while pulling away - it was reckless rather than deliberate.”
He told the court Morris missed his trial after suffering cracked ribs and two black eyes in a robbery in a Worksop park.
“He wasn’t physically able to attend court. He didn’t arrange for the court to be contacted about that and there is no medical evidence,” added Mr Wilford.
