A WORKSOP man was spared jail after admitting assaulting his former wife.

Dariusz Krzysztof Nowak, 46, of Lincoln View, admitted assaulting his estranged wife and her new partner on 4th June, as well as breaching a restraining order.

Kate Beardmore, prosecuting, told Worksop Magistrates Court a restraining order was placed on Nowak on 7th December after he was convicted of harassment.

The court heard Nowak had gone to his former wife’s home to drop off their 18-month-old granddaughter.

“She called for her daughter to answer the door. But when she didn’t get a response she went to open the door because it was late,” she said.

“As she tried to get the pram in the house Nowak pushed past her. He stretched out his arms as if to embrace her but pushed her head with his elbow and got her in a headlock.”

“She managed to free herself but he pushed passed her into the living room and punched her new partner in the face.”

David Grant, defending, said Nowak was ‘struggling to come to terms’ with the breakdown of the relationship.

“He felt because he wanted to be affectionate to start with that shouldn’t be assault. He says they finished up entwined, but nothing more serious. He also says he didn’t throw a proper punch,” he said.

Nowak was sentenced to 90 days in prison for each offence, suspended for 12 months. He was also given a 12 month community order and must complete 100 hours of unpaid work, pay £50 compensation to each victim and £200 costs.
