Jailed after mugging disabled man in town

TWO thieves who mugged a disabled man of his pedal cycle in Gainsborough have each been jailed for 30 months at Lincoln Crown Court.

Jason Akrill and Jake Hardy stopped their 35-year-old victim as he cycled along the Riverside Walk in Gainsborough.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, said Hardy blocked the man’s way and he was told to get off his bike.

Mr Howes said: “There was then a struggle which lasted a number of minutes before the bicycler was wrested from his grasp and taken from him.”

“Akrill then cycles off on the stolen bike while Hardy climbs onto the bike which Akrill had earlier been riding.”

The injured man was left on the ground. He suffered injuries to his knee and hand as well as a cut lip.

When the pair were later arrested Akrill said he was drunk and felt bad about what happened. Hardy made no comment.

Hardy, 23, of Richardson Rise, Gainsborough, and Akrill, 24, of no fixed address, each admitted robbery on 1st March. They also admitted theft of alcohol from the B and M Bargain store in Gainsborough on the same day.

Catarina Sjolin, for Hardy, said he was genuinely ashamed and sorry for what he did.

“This was not a planned incident,” she said. “It was a spontaneous and opportunistic offence. He didn’t know the victim and was not aware of his disability.”

Michael Cranmer-Brown, for Akrill, said he was plainly drunk at the time the offence occurred. He said Akrill’s mother died during the time he was in custody awaiting sentence which was ‘a traumatic experience’ for him.
