It's the end of an era for village club
LAST orders are finally to be called at the Misterton Sports and Social Club, which has been at the heart and soul of the village for almost three decades.
The club is set to close its doors on Sunday with an ‘end-of-an-era’ party on Saturday night before the building is knocked down to make way for housing.
But the club committee is close to securing a lease on a new building that they hope to transform into a club that would be the ‘envy’ of surrounding villages.
Plans are under way for the former mobile phone shop on Fox Covert Lane known as Millenium House to be turned into a social club and meeting room – and possibly a village hall as well.
”We intend to make this venture into a first class modern recreational facility, not just for a few but to involve all the residents of Misterton and the surrounding villages,” said club spokesman and trustee Ray Janney.
Mr Janney hopes that Misterton Parish Council will take up this ‘fantastic opportunity’ to use the space as a village hall that could cater to more than 250 people.
Hazel Brand, chairman of the parish council, told the Standard that the proposals were ‘certainly worth investigating’ and the council will be consulting with the Misterton community.
”The council raises money through the precept on Council Tax and we think people should have a say on an initiiative as big as this one,” she said.
”We have been working with the club committee since they secured planning permission on the site.
“We will be getting out a questionnaire to every household in the village over the next few weeks.”
The social club, which was first formed and opened in October 1981, is known as the Newells Social Club as it began as a club for the workers of the Newell factory – an engineering works that operated for about 100 years.
Later, the club opened up to all Misterton residents and people from the surrounding area and the club regularly holds music and entertainment nights.
When Langley Homes Ltd submitted the planning application to Bassetlaw Council for eight houses on the site, planners received 200 objections.
Planning permission was granted back in 2008 and the club submitted their application for the Fox Covert Lane building in March, 2009 – with permission granted in July.
If anyone wishes to comment, or offer help in any way with the new social club, they can email details to socialclub misterton@gmail.com.
The last night of entertainment at Misterton Sports Social Club will take place on Saturday 23rd January with star personality entertainer Carina Lee, and Martin Odley with a disco, from 9pm.
