TWO Carlton sisters died when the car their mother was driving ‘lost control’ and crashed into an oncoming vehicle, an inquest has heard.

The inquest into the deaths of Chantelle Grace Keywood, five, and her sister Yleina Skye Keywood, twenty-two months, was opened today (Monday) at Chesterfield Coroners Court.

It is one week to the day since the fatal crash on the B6042 Crags Road near Creswell, on 24th September.

The court heard how the sisters, of Canterbury Walk, Carlton, had been back seat passengers in the Peugeot 106 being driven by their mother, Amy Keywood.

PC Bernie Glynn of Derbyshire Police crash investigation unit said the car was travelling towards Creswell when it ‘lost control, crossed the carriageway and collided with a Citroën C2 travelling the other way’.

As a result, the Peugeot left the road to the offside and ended up in a hedge.

The collision happened at around 5pm. Both girls were taken to hospital but did not survive their injuries, being pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Their mother and seven-year-old sister survived the crash with minor injuries.

Assistant deputy coroner James Newman adjourned both inquests until investigations are complete, when a full inquest will be held.

He appealed for anyone who saw the collision or can help the police to call the witness appeal line on 01773 572929 and leave a message.
