Husband speaks out after cyclist ‘critical but stable’ from Spring Gardens lorry accident
An air ambulance was called to the serious accident on Spring Gardens in Gainsborough
A local woman who was air-lifted to hospital after a serious road accident in Gainsborough last week remains in a ‘critical but stable’ condition.
Carol Jean Butler, 66, was left ‘seriously injured’ following an accident on Spring Gardens near Marshall’s Yard in Gainsborough at around 11.11am on Wednesday 13th March after a collision with a lorry.
As you can see from these images, further dramatic scences unfolded as an ambucopter attended the scene and transported the lady to Hull Royal Infirmary, where she remains in a serious condition.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the police and ambulance teams,” said husband and Gainsborough Town Councillor John Butler, from Alfred Street, speaking to The Standard.
“The police escorted an ambulance from Lincoln because there wasn’t nearby, then as soon as that arrived they sent for the ambucopter.”
Coun Butler continued: “All of the services worked together and it’s for that reason that she is still alive and with us today.”
He said that despite his wife being in an induced coma in hospital, she was battling through and the family were taking things one day at a time.
“The wheel of the lorry ran over her arm and shoulder which theysorted with surgery, but she’s still in intensive care, and we were scared because of the head injury,” he added. “Carol has been sedated into an induced coma which they’ll reduce with time because the head injury will only heal with lots of rest.”
Coun Butler added that he’d like to thank friends, family and well-wishers for all of their kindness and support.
After the incident Beaumont Street was closed for much of the day between Spital Terrace and the Tesco junction for police investigations .
Speaking about road safety in Gainsborough in general, area representative for The National Cycling Charity and owner of Church Street Cycles Trevor Halstead that everyone should be more aware of their surroundings.
“I always think that cycle training goes a long way and safety often gets overlooked,” he said. “I’m a big believer that bicycles belong on the roads and we shouldn’t be pushed on to the footpath. I’d advise everyone to be careful and more observant of their surroundings.”
He added: “To cyclists I’d urge them to hold their position on the roadand to motorists I’d say give us a little more thought, room and patience.”
