Half century for Guardian’s golden couple

Alan and Christine Nunn celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary.

A WORKSOP couple whose romance blossomed while working at the Guardian have just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Alan and Christine Nunn, of Holmefield Close, met in 1958 while working at the Guardian’s offices and Sissons and Sons Printers on Bridge Street.

Alan, then aged 17, was working as an apprentice printer while Christine, aged just 15, was a secretary.

Two years later they were engaged and had a party at the Guardian offices.

“Mr Sissons went across the road and bought a barrel of beer for the party,” said 71-year-old Alan.

“It was a lovely place to work in those days.”

The couple were married two years later at the old Wesley Church on Newcastle Street on 24th March 1962.

But Alan’s sporting commitments made their special day slightly out of the ordinary.

“It had to be a morning wedding because I was a goalkeeper for Worksop Town Football Club,” said Alan.

“We had a game against Grantham in the afternoon at the Central Avenue ground.”

“But a lot of our wedding guests came along to watch the match and cheer us on.”

After they married Alan went on to work for the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph for 23 years, before setting up a taxi and private hire business in 1988.

Christine, now 69, worked as a nurse at Victoria and Kilton hospitals.

The couple have three sons, Paul, David and Philip and seven grandchildren.

Although their anniversary was in March, the couple had to delay their celebrations because Alan had been ill following heart surgery.

But last week they enjoyed a short holiday in Skegness with their grandchildren to mark half a century of married life together.

And the secret to a long and happy marriage? Alan puts it down to just one thing.

“You have to pretend you’re deaf,” he said.
