GALLERY: Crowds gather at town church
SILENCE fell around Gainsborough's All Saints Church as service men and women past and present gathered to commemorate this year's Remembrance Sunday.
Civic dignitaries and local residents came together on Sunday in a moving service to mark the 91st anniversary of the end of the First World War.
The Royal British Legion led the service at the church on Gladstone Street, followed by a short ceremony at the cenotaph situated opposite Gainsborough House, to remember those who have died serving their country.
Wreaths were laid at the memorial West Lindsey Council chairman Jessie Milne and town mayor Raoul Hesse Phillipson, as well as representatives from a number of groups and individuals.
Vice chairman for the Gainsborough branch of the Royal British Legion Michael Wragg said this year's service was 'extremely poignant' in light of recent event's in Afghanistan.
"It was extremely well-attended and there appeared to be a greater turn-out than last year. It was very nice to have a visit and the laying of the wreath from a member of the Royal Navy from HMS Brocklesby, which is twinned with West Lindsey," he said.
"The last few months have been a reminder that death within the forces goes on year after year and there is no respite from it."
"It's important that we look out for our men and women serving their country and remember what they are trying to do - that's the whole point of the Poppy Appeal."
