Gainsborough train station signal box burns down
Firefighters rushed to Gainsborough Lea Road station this evening when the Lincoln-bound side signal box caught fire.
Two fire engines arrived just after 6pm to battle the fiercely burning building, which was clearly visible from the road.
After exhausting the water tanks of the two engines, officers pumped water from a hydrant at the nearby pedestrian crossing on Lea Road to continue fighting the flames.
The fire was contained and extinguished by 7pm but trains were severely delayed due to the railway line closure. The Lincoln-bound Platform 1 was partially closed off.
Officers from Network Rail, the British Transport Police and Lincolnshire Police arrived on scene within an hour.
Police officers directed traffic around the two fire engines on Lea Road, which remained open.
Fireman Steve Wright, the incident officer, said: "We were called just before six and sent two pumps from Gainsborough. We are awaiting the arrival of a site engineer to inspect the power supply to the box before we can isolate the cause."
There is currently no official statement on possible causes for the fire.
