Funds keep ‘em on track

ONE of Gainsborough’s most popular visitor attractions is preparing to go full steam ahead into the new year - with a little help from some council funding.
Two West Lindsey district councillors have supported the Gainsborough Model Railway Society by awarding grants to cover the cost of producing and distributing 8,000 leaflets to promote the charity’s open days in 2013.
With some 180 engines and more than 400 items of rolling stock in the collection, running on half a mile of track, the 66-year-old society has taken nearly 30 years to build the model railway. In 2012 the railway has seen an increasing number of visitors, and the last open day, at its premises on Florence Terrace, Gainsborough, welcomed more than 200 visitors.
Society chairman Richard Woods said: “We used to have people queuing down Florence Terrace to come in, but a lot of tourist places are really struggling for visitor numbers. This year we’ve been very pleased because the numbers have gone up quite a lot.”
Secretary Mick Clapham added: “It’s amazing where people come from. We’ve entertained a group from Holland, and had a couple from Australia visit last year.”
Coun Trevor Young, who gave £690.13 of funding, said: “I think it’s a real jewel that not many people really know about. I think a lot of people in Gainsborough are aware of the railway but it isn’t until they come through the doors they get a surprise to see how good it is.”
“The quality and detail is absolutely amazing and is the result of a lot of hard work over the years. It’s something we should be very proud of and something we should definitely support.”
