Delighted cadets say thanks for minibus boost

The world is their oyster now that Worksop Sea Cadets have a brand new minibus to get around in.

Last year Worksop Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets were Sainsbury’s chosen local charity of the year.

And they worked together to raise money for a minibus for the youngsters.

Now, with the help of Sainsbury’s and their generous customers, the cadets have got wheels.

The Sea Cadets travel around the country for various training and events and rely heavily on a minibus to transport them.

They go to places as far away as Portsmouth to stay on board HMS Bristol, Pier Cellars – a Naval training base in Cornwall, and take part in events on the River Thames.

Since buying the minibus the Junior Cadets, who are aged 10 to 12, recently went out and did marine field craft activities.

“The cadets were so excited to go out into the field. I also really enjoyed the experience – it took me back to my childhood,” said volunteer civilian instructor Wright.

On parade nights the Royal Marines Cadets, who are aged 13 to 18, have been able to go out on weekly night manoeuvres as part of their training. And during the boating season the cadets regularly travel to Welbeck to take part in rowing, power boating and sailing activities.

The minibus will help transport them to this kind of activity.

Commanding officer Simon Gillert said: “The minibus has been a vital resource for transporting the cadets as we had to rely on parents which was not always convenient.”

On behalf of all Worksop Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets he thanked the Sainsbury’s Worksop store and their customers for all their help and generosity.

He also thanked FINESIGN of Dinnington, who helped with the signage on the minibus.

If you are aged between 10 and 18 years old and are interested in joining Worksop Sea Cadets or Royal Marines Cadets contact 01909 487498 or visit them on parade nights which are Monday and Thursday 6.45pm until 9pm at 74a Gateford Road, Worksop.
