Communities urged to be prepared for flooding disruption

THE Environment Agency is warning communities across South Yorkshire to remain vigilant and alert for heavy flooding as rain is set to continue this evening and into Tuesday.

There are currently four warnings and 28 flood alerts in place across Yorkshire and the North East, including several on the River Rother, with more expected to be issued.

The Met Office is forecasting that up to 100mm of rain could fall over parts of the north of England and the Midlands.

Warnings are likely to be issued for river and surface water flooding. Residents are being urged to prepare for possible flooding by checking the weather forecasts, signing up for flood warnings and staying out of flood water.

Commuters have already experienced disruption this morning on roads and rail lines affected by flooding, and further impacts could be seen this evening.

The Environment Agency has mobilised teams across the country to check on flood defences, clear any river blockages and closely monitor river levels.

Those in areas at risk should check the Environment Agency website for the latest information - www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood and sign up for free flood warnings.
