House fire on Hawthorne Way, Carlton In Lindrick (w120118-2a)

A CARLTON home has been severely damaged after flames ripped through its roof.

Firefighters were faced with a cloud of smoke when they were called to the Hawthorn Way property (right) at around 8am on Sunday.

The first floor and the roof have been visibly damaged by fire which took crews from Worksop, Harworth and Mansfield several hours to extinguish.

Next door neighbour Alan Day, 61, said the fire was so bad he had to be escorted out of his home.

“Someone came to get me at about 7.30 in the morning, they told me I had better get out the house because the property next door was on fire,” he said.

“My kitchen was full of smoke, as was upstairs and my loft, so I picked my dog Buster up and ran across the road.”

“I was looking at it and suddenly it burst into flames.”

“I was coughing quite a lot and just got out in the nick of time. I’m lucky to be here really.”

It is believed the occupiers were not in the property when the fire started.

A Hawthorn Way resident, who wished not to be named, said it was ‘chaos’ on Sunday morning.

“There were three fire engines and quite a few of us out on the street from our houses because of the fire,” she said.

“When we looked out of our windows we couldn’t tell which house was on fire.”

The fire is not being treated as suspicious and further investigations are due to take place once the house is deemed as being structurally sound, a police spokesman said.
