Cafe for mums opens its doors

A NEW drop-in cafe to provide support and help to breast-feeding mums was declared officially open this week by special guest Lord Victor Adebowale.

The Baby Cafe is now open on Tuesdays from 12pm-1.30pm at The Children's Centre in Gainsborough's Market Arcade.

The cafe is one of 132 of its kind across the UK and is only the second to be opened in Lincolnshire – with one already up-and-running in Grantham.

Lord Victor, who is chief executive of the UK's leading social care organisation Turning Point, gave a speech at the opening, saying: "A community's future can be developed from this kind of initiative supporting this kind of thing is just what this country is about."

"I am very honoured to be here today and what is happening here today is very important."

One mum who came along to the first day of the cafe was 19-year-old Kayleigh Gill, who did not breastfeed with her first child Alexander but is hoping to breastfeed her son, who is due on 6th February.

"I didn't have much help with Alexander but my mum encouraged me to come here and get more help this time round,"she said.

"The support workers are great here and I'm certainly going to come along and use The Baby Cafe. I think it's a great way of providing support to mothers."

Ellen Smith, managing director of Lincolnshire Community Health Services, said: "I am absolutely delighted with how today has gone."

"Anything we can do to help mums with the hardest job in the world is a good thing."

Within Lincolnshire, Gainsborough has one of lowest breastfeeding rates in the county - with only 15 per cent of mothers' breastfeeding their babies at six to eight weeks.

Anyone interested in taking part in The Baby Cafe can talk to their midwife, or visiting health team for more information, or contact the children's centre on 01427 617767.
