Ambulance service reports drop in Bonfire Night call outs this year

East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS) saw a reduction in the number of calls related to Bonfire Night this year.

This year there were seven calls relating to Bonfire Night which were received between Saturday 3rd and Monday 5th November - compared to nine service calls in 2011.

The calls received related to burns (three calls) and incidents where fireworks had either hit individuals or exploded in peoples’ hands or faces (four calls).

Dave Wright, an EMAS paramedic, said: “Attending an organised Bonfire Night remains the safest option for anyone who wants to enjoy a firework display.”

“If you are using fireworks yourself always read the instructions carefully and stay sober. Fireworks and alcohol do not mix.”

Basic First Aid can be used to help those suffering from burns.

Dave added: “If someone’s clothing has set alight remember ‘stop, drop and roll’ – which means get that person onto the floor and roll them to extinguish the flames.”

“Minor burns covering a small area of skin should initially be treated with clean cold water and further advice sought but in serious and life-threatening situations call 999.”
