£23m academy gears up for its completion

GAINSBOROUGH'S educational future is taking shape as the multi-million pound Trent Valley Academy site nears completion.

The 23m academy, with dual specialist status in Performing Arts and Technology, will officially open on 1st September and will house the former Middlefield and Castle Hills School, as well as brand new special school Aegir Community School.

TVA executive principal Tom Megahy said: “Our greatest hope is that it comes to be seen by the Gainsborough people as their greatest community resource.”

Mr Megahy said the whole school was excited with the impending opening, and said the site was changing rapidly on a daily basis.

“I go up to the site quite regularly and was surprised at seeing how fast things are changing.”

“We are now about to move to the next stage when all the equipment and furniture starts arriving.”

Mr Megahy said the current schools already enjoy outstanding sports facilities, but the new academy will house a professional fitness suite with gym equipment, as well as dance and aerobic studios and WII Sports machines.

“Our two specialisms also mean we will have a community theatre, TV studio and radio station, which will enable us to make our own programmes and broadcast from our own station.”

”We were determined to have 21st century technology, and have spent 2m on ICT. The ethos is that it doesn’t matter where you are in the school – IT will be available at all times. It’s about the notion of ‘anywhere, anytime’ learning.”

Mrs Gittins, executive principal of the Gainsborough Federation, said the new Aegir Community School will offer superb facilities for pupils with a diverse range of needs – including a purpose-built hyrdo pool and sensory room.

The school’s second phases will begin in the autumn term when foundations will be laid for the Warren Wood Community School, which is expected to be completed in 18 months.

She said: ”This is a very exciting project for Gainsborough and West Lindsey, and we can be very proud to be at the forefront of developing provision in the 21st century in the form of the Gainsborough Federation incorporating the Aegir Community School and the Warren Wood Community School which will be the flagship for Special Education Needs in the county.”
