WORKSOP golfer Lee Westwood could be granted the highest honour by Bassetlaw Council at a special meeting to be held this month.

The authority will meet on Monday 13th February to discuss whether to confer the title of honorary freeman to Lee and grant him Freedom of the District of Bassetlaw.

A council spokesman said: “The conferring of Honorary Freeman recognises the significant contribution an individual has made to the community and enables people of the district to take pride in that honour.”

It is proposed a further council meeting is held on 20th March to formally present the honour to Lee, which will include the presentation of a ‘Jewel of Office’ to him.

The extraordinary meeting will be held at 7pm at Retford Town Hall on Monday 13th February.
