The Post Office, which is located on 96 Union Street, will be transformed with a new ‘open plan’ design thanks to a nationwide £640m Government scheme.

Opening hours will also be increased to 54 hours a week with the new branch being open from 08:30am–17:30pm on Monday to Saturday.

Post Office area manager Lesley Frankland said customers ‘would benefit’ from the changes.

She said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Harthill and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme.”

“It is the largest in the history of the Post Office, and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes,” she added.

The Government has committed £1.34bn for the Post Office network to ensure there is no programme of Post Office closures and to update branches.

In November, the Government announced a further £640m investment in the Post Office network from 2015 to 2018.

The investment programme will see up to 8,000 branches modernised across the country, with additional investment in over 3,000 community and outreach branches.

The Post Office, which is now independent of Royal Mail, is the largest retail network in the UK.

It has over 11,500 branches across the country.

Harthill Post Office will close for refurbishment at 17:30pm on Monday 16th June and the new branch is scheduled to open tp customers at 13:00 on Thursday 3rd July.

Nearby branches at Kiveton Park and Killamarsh will look after customers’ needs during the period of temporary closure.
