Good value for money at Meghna

Meghna Indian Restaurant, Church Street, Gainsborough

My partner and I have different opinions about the Indian restaurant Meghna on Church Street Gainsborough. Last Saturday we both decided we fancied a curry and so we thought we’d try the recently refurbished restaurant.

On arrival we were immediately shown to our seats and promptly brought our drinks of beer and white wine.

The décor is clean and crisp and the restaurant does look the part of a trendy modern Indian restaurant.

However, there is something lacking in terms of atmosphere.

Perhaps it was unfortunate that on this occasion there was one too many empty seats and a restaurant’s atmosphere is created by the buzz of fellow diners.

Although, it was quite refreshing not to have a constant stream of people collecting takeaway orders.

We ordered four popadoms and a pickles tray to start.

The pickles tray had a new addition I had not encountered before in other restaurants.

I’m not sure what it was, but it was of a deep purple colour, sweet and spicy. We guessed that perhaps it was some sort of beetroot pickle. Whatever it was it was very enjoyable.

For main I ordered one Meghna’s Signature Dishes a Chicken Chilli Massala which consists of tandoori chicken off the bone cooked with spring onions, capsicum and keema in a special bhuna sauce.

My partner had a vegetarian curry with a mango based sauce.

She loved hers, however, I was not too keen on the keema in my dish – I have to admit not quite to my liking but the sauce was very nice indeed!

The mains were brought over to us on a trolley, (a nice personal touch).

The staff are polite and have attention to detail with the emphasis on the personal touch.

This was made obvious when my partner ordered a second glass of wine and said she was willing to use the same glass again, a fresh glass was brought over as a matter of course it seemed.

The service on the whole was good but we did have to wait a long time before the bill was presented.

The total bill came to just over £33 for two beers, two white wines, pickles tray, four popadoms, chapati, vegetable curry, chicken curry, vegetable rice, pilau rice.

This compares favourably with other similar restaurants in the area.
