Gateford: Brother and sister to help homeless children in New York

A Gateford brother and sister are giving up their summer to work with homeless children at a camp in New York.

Chloe Slater, 21, and Jack, 19, are flying out to Camp Homeward Bound on Tuesday 17th June.

Lincoln University psychology graduate, Chloe, will be working as a music instructor teaching guitar, drums, keyboard as well as having to organise a talent show.

She said: “I went to the camp for the first time last year and I loved it.”

“It gives the kids such a nurturing environment and I loved being part of that.”

“Because of the kind of lifestyle the kids have it is really difficult for them to have a ‘normal’ childhood and camp gives them a chance to do that.”

“We have paid for the trip all ourselves but the charity, Coalition For the Homeless, do an amazing job aiding the growing homeless population in New York.”

Young sibling Jack, a first year student at Bishop Grossteste University, will be volunteering as a counsellor, working with a group of six kids.

“I have heard a lot about Camp Homeward Bound and I can’t wait to go,” Jack said.

“I am really looking forward to making a positive impact on the kids lives.”

It is such a great cause because these kids can’t help the situation they are in so I want to help out as much as I can.”

Whilst in New York the pair will be living in tents at the camp, eating meals together with kids and taking them on activities.

The 300 children at the camp, aged between six and 15, have all at some point been in a homeless shelter, a domestic violence shelter or in foster care.

Proud mum, Jane, said: “I have encouraged Chloe and Jack to take this opportunity to experience another culture and I am really proud of them both, especially as they will be helping those less fortunate than themselves.”
