Gainsborough: Freak weather causes shop roof to collapse

The freak weather brought a different kind of drama to customers and staff at a Gainsborough shop after the deluge caused the roof to cave in.

The incident occurred at B&M Bargains on Lord Street shortly after lunch time on Monday (9th June) when water began pouring through the ceiling, followed by parts of the roof.

Fortunately, no-one was hurt but the shop was still forced to close for the rest of the day while the mess was cleared up.

“We have had the odd little leak here before but nothing on this scale,” said deputy manager Nathan Turner.

“We heard the rain pouring down outside and then suddenly, it was running down our walls and through the ceiling, which was caving in.”

“We heard it hit the electricity box first so we knew something was wrong then, and the it just came through the roof.”

“The building the shop is in has a flat roof and there must have been a lake of water settling and building up on the top and eventually, the weight was too much and it came through.”

“The damage is mainly cosmetic, all our papers are soaked through and everywhere is wet.”

“But we had someone coming out on the day to hopefully sort us out and get us open again within a day.”

“It still doesn’t alter the fact though, that we had to close on Monday and we lost a decent amount of trading time as a result which is very frustrating.”

Flooding also affected other parts of the town centre as the area was drenched in torrential rain.

“I’ve certainly not known to rain that heavily around here for some time.”
