Work has begun on a long-awaited £60,000 flood defence scheme that will protect homes and reduce the chance of flooding in Sturton by Stow.

A ditch, about 1km in length, the equivalent to 10 football pitches, will be created to capture flood water from the surrounding fields and carry it safely to an existing water course.

Ward member for Sturton by Stow Coun Reg Shore said: “This scheme will help protect 12 previously flooded properties that were flooded internally as well as land and gardens in the village.”

Further work is planned to improve surface water drainage in the centre of the village.
