Worksop’s fallen to be remembered at Battle of Somme centenary

The events will take place on Friday, July 1 at Worksop war memorial and on Saturday, July 2 at the Priory Church.

At 7.30 am on July 1 1916, a whistle blown three times was the signal that marked the start of one of the largest battles of the First World War – the Battle of the Somme.

For many people, it came to be the battle that symbolised the horrors of the war.

A ceremony which will include a whistle blown three times will take place at the town’s war memorial on Memorial Avenue at 7.30am on Friday, July 1 as an act of remembrance.

This will be followed by a service at Priory Church on Saturday, July 2.

Music will be provided by Worksop’s The Musicality Singers and by the Dukeries Community Band.

During the course of a candle lighting ceremony, members of the Cadet Forces will read out the names of Worksop service personnel who fell in the battle.

The evening will end with an act of silent remembrance and a fall of poppies.
