Out of over 5,500 applications received from around the UK this year, only 875 students were selected to take part in the residential programme which involved lectures, seminars and practical workshops taught by some of Oxford’s top academics.

Rachel Oliver, who joined John Leggott College from South Axholme Academy, took part in the Freshfields ExpLaw summer school, to give her an insight into studying Law at The University of Oxford. She was encouraged to apply by the A*spire team at John Leggott College, with the application process including a personal statement about her aspirations and motivation for taking part.

“Only one in twelve applications were successful, so it was really competitive and I’m so pleased I was offered a place. The summer school was amazing – I had lectures in the Law faculty, stayed in one of the colleges and really got a feel for student life at Oxford. The class discussions were so interesting, and I spent time with people all over the UK who have similar goals to myself.”

Henry Bray came to John Leggott College from Huntcliff School and is hoping to study Maths at The University of Oxford, following his own successful summer school experience.

“One of my friends, who also went to John Leggott College, took part in the UNIQ summer school last year and recommended I apply. The application process was similar to a UCAS application, so it was helpful to practise writing a personal statement. I got the opportunity to study Maths topics that wouldn’t normally be covered at A Level, so I had a real insight into the world of Maths beyond education. I’ve made so many friends – I now have links with people all over the country.”

Emma Lappin, who joined John Leggott College from St. Bede’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, joined the History summer school which included ‘flash talks’ from esteemed Professors at the University, as well as an opportunity to try rowing with other students.

“Apart from learning new skills and exploring the University, my confidence has really grown and I feel much happier about contributing in lessons.”

The UNIQ summer school programme is designed to test a student’s ability and to challenge their understanding of a subject. The week is an intense experience of non-stop academic studies in the day mixed with key social experiences in the evening, including the popular city Ghost Tour.

Students at John Leggott College are given bespoke support through the Opportunities & Destinations team, including help with applying to summer schools. These insights into life beyond college help to raise aspirations across the student body – with the early application process to top Universities and competitive courses taking place right now, the summer school programmes are a perfect opportunity for students to plan their futures.
