A ‘green’ business idea fostered by South Axholme Academy students has grown to award-winning proportions.

The team of Y10 budding entrepreneurs dubbed the ‘Urban Garden Project’ won the ‘Best Company 2016’ Award at the South Humberside County Finals of Young Enterprise. They now move on to June’s prestigious Yorkshire Regional Final.

Their business ‘Herb Heads’ features a miniature urban garden with peat free pots, soil, seeds and cut out faces to encourage young children to grow and eat herbs. Pots have faces with herbs that sprout up to look like hair.

Over a year, students register and pay VAT and corporation tax, open a business bank account, buy stock, sell products, produce a company report, keep profit and loss accounts and a balance sheet.

So far South Axholme has won three awards at the South Humber Area Final, and four awards at the South Humberside County final.

Sara Hudson, head of business and enterprise, said: “The team have worked extremely hard to build their business into such a success and I wish them the best of luck for the next round.” Team members are; Cerys Addlesee, Jessica Simpson, Ben Stewart, Ellie Hildrith, Hannah Marsden, Rebecca Arrand, Owen Paterson and Ellis Croxall.
