‘Mean’ thief spared jail

A THIEF who pawned his partner’s property in Creswell to buy drugs and pay debts to dealers has been spared jail.

John Harris, 26, had been in an ‘on and off’ relationship with the woman and she returned home one day to find a television, electronic games and jewellery were missing.

Probation officer Julia Gillott said: “He showed remorse and acknowledged it was a mean offence. He saw her as an easy target and knew he wouldn’t be able to make recompense.”

Harris, of Crich Road, Inkersall, Staveley, admitted theft between 1st and 28th August, and between 1st January and 17th March.

The judge imposed 120 hours’ unpaid work, a one-year probation supervision order and ordered Harris to pay £500 in compensation.
