A coffee morning was held in All Saints’ Church in Beckingham on Thursday 15th May to raise money for Christian Aid. This charity helps the poorest of the world’s people to help themselves by growing food, finding work etc. It helps to find and reunite families divided by wars or disasters. £215 was raised and thanks go to all who came and gave so generously. We even had visitors from Ireland and California!
An evening of musical entertainment by the ‘Bel Canto Singers’. Songs from the show and some oldies, classical and new. A highly entertaining evening is assured. At their meeting on Monday 19th May, members and visitors welcomed the speaker Jo Bennison who took them on a trip around the world showing slides of peonies. Jo has had a passion for growing peonies for many years and grows 270 varieties in a field at East Firsby. She will be holding Peony field open weekends on 7th - 8th June and 14th - 15th June. Jo sells bare rooted peonies to the public in September and explained that it takes five years from planting a seed to getting the plant to flower! Future events for Beckingham Gardeners’ Club include: June 16th visit to Chestnut Lavender Farm Upton; July 21st visit to “Walks of life Heritage Centre” Tuxford. Members discussed arrangements for the Club’s Annual Flower & Vegetable Show, which is to be held on Saturday 19th July in All Saints’ Church Beckingham. Anyone can enter the show. Show programmes will be available from the beginning of June in Beckingham, Walkeringham and Misterton Post Offices. Members agreed that they would participate in the Marsh Fayre, which is to be held in Beckingham Village Hall on 20th September 12noon-5pm to raise funds for the RSPB. It was also agreed at the meeting that as from their next speaker meeting which is to be held on Monday, September 15th the meetings will start at 7.30pm. If you are interested in gardening why not come and join the club which is very informal and friendly. As well as talks from interesting gardeners we also have trips to gardens and places of gardening interest. All meetings are held at 7.30pm in Beckingham Recreation Room. Guests and prospective new members from Beckingham, local villages and towns, or from further away, will be made very welcome.
