First glimpse of new town KFC
An artists' impression of what Gainsborough's new KFC restaurant will look like
YOUR Standard can now reveal the first glimpse at what Gainsborough’s new KFC drive-through restaurant will look like.
These artist’s impressions show a modern, bold and striking design in KFC’s branded red and white colour scheme.
The drive-through restaurant will be largely glass-fronted on the side facing Roseway - in similar keeping with the many windows of the face of the cube-like Gainsborough Methodist Church which is just next door.
The restaurant will be on the site of the former Magistrates’ Court, in Roseway off Church Street - creating around 25 jobs on the site that has been empty since the court closed in 2008.
The former court was erected in 1975 but has been closed for more than three years - attracting anti-social behaviour and vandalism and becoming known as ‘an eyesore’ among visitors and local residents.
KFC have said that the build is likely to be completed and open by mid-2013.
Horsley’s furniture and carpet shop have been trading in Gainsborough for over 100 years.
The fourth-generation family business has been operating on Church Street since 1902 - and they say that KFC should bring improvements to the area, as long as it’s fitting with the town centre’s history.
“I think it’s a much needed improvement when you look at the state of the site at the moment,” said John Horsley.
He added: “As long as it’s done sympathetically to what’s around it then we’ll welcome it - because the Magistrates’ Court is an absolute eyesore at the moment.”
Coun Stuart Curtis, vice-chairman of the planning committee on West Lindsey District Council said that he believed the designs were in keeping with the local area - neighbouring sites include All Saints’ Parish Church, Gainsborough Old Hall and Marshall’s Yard.
“KFC have worked hard with the council to ensure the development will not only be in keeping with the character of the surrounding area, which includes a Grade I listed church, but will also enhance the area,” said Coun Curtis.
He added: “In addition, the development will complement our existing plans to regenerate the town centre – something we are trying to achieve through the Elswitha Quarter and the Public Realm Improvement Scheme - and create a better environment for residents, visitors and future investment.”
A spokesman from planning agent Barton Willmore, on behalf of KFC, also said that respect was paid to the site’s surroundings.
He said: “We have worked very hard with council officers over many months to come up with a scheme that brings the necessary regenerative qualities to the site, securing a high quality development that is not only modern and striking but also respectful to the heritage assets nearby.”
