A GAINSBOROUGH business man is jst one step away from winning a top award.

Steve Gelder, 46, has made it to the final three in the Apprenticeship Champion of the Year award category of the National Apprenticeship Awards and is now in the running to be crowned national winner.

He was nominated for the award following his significant achievements since finishing his Apprenticeship and his subsequent role in championing Apprenticeships.

Steve, Managing Director of the Gelder Group, a construction company headquartered in Lincoln, left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications.

He went on to complete an Apprenticeship in Bricklayer with Truelove Builders, which laid the foundations for his future success. 30 years on, Steve now runs a company with sales of £45 million and employs more than 300 people and 29 apprentices, both male and female.

An awards spokesman said: “He was nominated for his significant contribution to championing Apprenticeships. Indeed, the very first employee at the Gelder Group was an apprentice who remains with the company today.”

Members of the public who want to back Steve can cast their vote at www.apprenticeships.org.uk.

Voting will be open until midnight on 4th November and Steve will find out whether he has been successful during the National Apprenticeship Awards at The Skills Show in Birmingham on 14th November.
