CELEBRATIONS were enjoyed by one long-time Gainsborough resident as she marked her 100th birthday with a special Christmas dinner.
Isabelle Brundell (or ‘Bella’ to her friends) marked a century of life with a meal at Whitton’s Gardens with family and friends. Formerly a directors cook at Marshall’s, Bella has lived in Gainsborough for most of her life.
She is very well known in the area, along with her husband Syndney - a former overseas engineer for Marshall’s tractor who has since passed away.
“She’s registered blind, but other than that she’s as bright and sparkling as a new pin,” said her son Terry Brundell. “She still looks after herself and does her own cleaning and bits and pieces like that - she’s a very happy lady.”
“We offered to get her a wheelchair but she spoke up and said ‘I’m not having one of those!’ She’s just so self-sufficient and positive and I think that’s what has kept her going for so long.”
He added: “She doesn’t let anything get her down. She’s also a wonderful grandmother and the kids absolutely love her to bits.”
To celebrate her birthday in style, Bella wanted something a little bit different.
“We went along to Whitton’s Gardens for a Christmas dinner, because that’s just what she wanted,” said Terry.
“We asked her what else she wanted for her birthday and she said she didn’t want any presents or flowers or anything like that, so she asked for everyone to make a donation to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance - which we all thought was a very good cause.”
He added: “We’ve raised over £167 so far but there’s still plenty of money to come in.”
