And they’re off!

Forget Ferarri and Mercedes, creative kids in Aston have shown they have the skills needed to make racing cars.

Children design and made racing models before putting them to the test at Aston Community Library over the half-term holidays.

The Wacky Races event, run in conjunction with the family learning department at Rotherham Council, was designed to get children, parents and carers working together and get youngsters interested in libraries.

“Everyone really enjoyed it. It was really well attended,” said library assistant Gemma Cosgrove.

“It was a special event for children and families to design and make spinning plate race models. They had a bit of a race at the end as well.”

“We thought it would be a fantastic event for us to do over the Jubilee when many places were closed, and we were so happy with how it went.”

The activity is part of many held at the library to encourage children to visit and find out what is on offer to them.

Gemma added: “We always do activities in the holidays and if anybody wants to know what we have planned they can come into the library and pick up a leaflet to see what’s on offer.”

The next event planned is a summer reading challenge. It involves children reading six books over the holidays and for every two books they read and tell us about they will get an incentive.”

“Every child who completes the challenge will get a certificate and medal.”

Gemma and the rest of the team will be signing youngsters up for the challenge in the week before the summer holidays.
