A HEROIC Gainsborough veteran has received a top award from the Royal British Legion (RBL).

Citizen of the Year Fred Richardson, from the Gainsborough and District Branch of the legion, has now also received the highest honour that the organisation can bestow on a member.

At a ceremony in Horncastle, the Lord Lieutenant for Lincolnshire Tony Worth presented Fred with the certificate and badge granting him National Life Membership of the legion.

A spokesman said: “Fred Richardson became a member in late 1945 or early 1946 and has been directly involved with the Poppy Appeal for the past 50 years and became a service worker in 1967.”

“He has completed 43 years as branch chairman and is currently branch vice-chairman.  He has been awarded a Branch Certificate of Appreciation.”

He continued: “Fred has tirelessly played a key role in keeping the branch and the local Poppy Appeal going for three decades and though now aged 91-years-old he continues to play an active role in all branch and Poppy Appeal activities.”

“His work for the Legion is well known throughout the local community and was formally recognised in January 2011 when a local housing development was named ‘Richardson Rise’ after him following a recommendation by West Lindsey District Council.

RBL Gainsborough branch chairman Michael Wragg said that Fred thoroughly merits recognition for his services to both the legion and to the local community.

Fred was also named Gainsborough Citizen of the Year 2012 and switched on the town centre’s Christmas lights at the opening ceremony.
