GAINSBOROUGH is to get a brand new NHS dental practice.
Lincolnshire Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) announced this week that the Alfreton-based Genesis Dental Care will be opening a practice in the town in early April.
Genesis Dental Care already operates practices in Grantham and Lincoln, and has agr
eed a contract with the trust to open a three-surgery practice at 19 Market Street.
The trust says that nearly 1,000 people who have been waiting for an NHS practice in Gainsborough will be among the first to be offered treatment at the new dental centre.
Dr Martin McShane, director of strategy and health outcomes for Lincolnshire PCT said "The PCT is delighted to have agreed this contract with Genesis Dental Care.
"This year we are building on the good work that started last year and our aim is to make sure that anyone who needs an NHS dentist in Lincolnshire will be able to access one."
The good news comes six months after the Standard revealed that the town lost two NHS dentists who went private - leaving the town with only six NHS dentists.
The recent dwindling NHS dental provision in the town has also been the subject of many campaigns.
The accommodation for the new NHS practice is being leased from the Co-op and is close to the centre of the town.
Richard Williams-Menlove, operations manager for Genesis Dental Care said patients will benefit from the new state-of-the-art practice.
He said: "Patients will benefit from state of the art equipment, digital imaging and computerised administration systems. There is easy access for those with limited mobility.
"Genesis Dental Care is run as an Industrial Provident Society that is committed to NHS dentistry and returns all profits to developing the business and is a part of Genesis Social Enterprise that has a track record of nearly 20 years, meeting community needs and helping others with similar objectives."
The PCT has spent more than £1.8 million since last year increasing NHS dental services across Lincolnshire. This year a further £1m has been allocated to improve services in priority areas which includes Gainsborough.
