FOUR people had a miraculous escape on Monday when a lorry shed its load onto their cars as they crossed Gainsborough's Trent Bridge.

The occupants of the two vehicles escaped unharmed after a 14 tonne metal fuel vessel fell onto the cars they were travelling in the rush hour, causing traffic chaos in the town.

None of the four people; two women, a schoolboy from Gringley-on-t
he-Hill and a man, were injured but were left shaken by their near miss.
"I am very shocked about what has happened," said the driver of the Land Rover, Phillip Wood, from Beckingham. "I am fine and OK. I have had a lucky escape."

Marlborough Street resident Kenneth Hooton, came across the scene at about 8.20am. He said: "I am very thankful no one was injured - it could have been a lot worse."
"The lady in the Peugeot was taking her son to school when it happened. I haven't seen an accident like this on the bridge for a long time."

"This kind of incident shows that Gainsborough needs a second bridge. They had plans for one on Wilson Street but that fell through but it is needed if the town grows like the authorities want it to."
Gainsborough's main gateway from Notts was closed for around four hours following the incident, which happened at 7.35am. Commuters also faced a 25-mile diversion to get into the town via Scunthorpe or Dunham Bridge.
Fire engines from Gainsborough, Misterton and Kirton-in-Lindsey fire stations attended the scene along with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue's support unit.

Incident commander Andy Higgins said the main reason fire and rescue were at the scene was to protect members of the public.
"The lorry appears to have come round the corner and somehow the vessel has come away from the lorry a
nd fallen onto these two vehicles," said Mr Higgins.
"There are no casualties. Everyone got our of their vehicles and they have had a very lucky escape."

Justine Turner from Mansfield was on his way to work in Scunthorpe and was following the vehicles involved in the crash.
The 39-year-old, who works for the RAF, said: "The back end of the lorry seemed to come up in the air and then the metal vessel fell onto the Peugeot and then onto the LandRover."
"I immediately got out of my car to check the passengers were OK and alerted the emergency services. It was a complete shock and thankfully there was a PCSO on the scene who also tended to the people involved."
A crane was called in to lift the vessel back onto the Mercedes Benz lorry as investigations into the incident and the clean-up operation began.

Trent Bridge was reopened to traffic at 11.45am.
Insp Dick Holmes from Lincolnshire Police added: "It seems that the lorry clipped the kerb and the vessel somehow was released from the load and fell onto the two cars involved."
"All occupants of the vehicles have been extremely lucky and we will be carrying out a full investigation into why the load fell off the back of the lorry."

S G Haulage Limited, from Saxilby, who subcontracted the movement of the vesssel, refused to comment.
