A teacher who was brought up in Walkeringham has been killed in an avalanche on Ben Nevis.
William Wilkinson, known as Will, was swept away while climbing the No 3 Gully on 30th December.

The 34-year-old was acting as a ‘pretend’ client for two experienced climbers training to become guides, after the person they originally wanted was n
ot available.

A memorial service for Mr Wilkinson will be held in St Mary Magdalene Church, Walkeringham on 13th February at 10.30am.

Mr Wilkinson was born in Worksop, moving to Walkeringham when he was eight years old. He went to Walkeringham Primary and Ordsall Hall School.

He gained a first class honours degree in Geography at Leeds University and completed his teacher training at the University of Sheffield.

He taught at Valley School in Worksop before moving to Inverness six years ago, where he met his fiancee Becky Speight.

Mr Wilkinson’s father, Bill, of Worksop said: “Will was a wonderful son and I’m really proud of him. He always gave his best in everything he did, both in work and sport."”

Mr Wilkinson died along with Nicholas Rosedale, 37, from Marlborough, in Wiltshire, when they were hit by tonnes of snow and hurled 600ft down the mountain.

Donations if desired can be made to Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland.

Alternatively they can be posted to: Mountain Rescue Committee Scotland, Kevin Ferguson, 2 Roger Quin Gardens, Galashiels, Selkirkshire TD1 3NQ, Scotland.
