GAINSBOROUGH town centre was the scene of a serious assault on a busy Saturday afternoon that left shoppers stunned.
A man and a woman were attacked on Beaumont Street near the entrance to the multi-story car park just after 1pm.

Town officers and an ambulance were called to the scene where a 34-year-old man received a head injury, lacerations to the jaw and a shoulder wound. A woman received a broken collar bone and cuts to the shoulder.

Both were taken to Lincoln County Hospital for treatment but have since been released.

Gainsborough police recovered an ice pick from the scene of the incident.

Det Con Dave Haddock from Gainsborough CID is appealing for witnesses.

"A lot of people witnessed the incident and have been left disturbed and upset about what they saw," he said.

"The attack occurred on the main thoroughfare through Gainsborough on a Saturday afternoon."

"We would like to hear from any witnesses to contact us in confidence," added Det Cons Haddock.

Security staff from Marshall's Yard also attended the scene.

"We are aware that an incident took place on Beaumont Street in Gainsborough on Saturday afternoon," said Amanda Holmes, spokesman for Marshall's Yard. "Marshall's Yard security attended to offer any assistance they could," she added.

Lincolnshire Co-operative's Lindsey Centre security guard Richard Oaks also heard about the incident on the shopwatch radio and decided to investigate and see if he could offer help.

"I went to the scene and as a trained first aider, I thought it was important to put my training into practice and do what I could to help," he said.

"The incident wasn't on our premises but we are part of the community here."

Mr Oakes carried out first aid including using tissues and bandages to stem the flow of blood from the male victim's injuries. He also helped to keep both victims calm and comfortable until the ambulance arrived.

Anyone with any information should contact police on 01522 882222 quoting incident number 227 of Saturday 12th July or via Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
