THIS week we feature a picture of part of Gainsborough’s most famous building - the Old Hall. We are unsure of the date of this view of the north side but it must have been taken many years ago as today trees dominate the scene.
The 15th Century manor house was built around 1460 by Sir Thomas Burgh as the symbol of his wealth and status. In 1596 the Hickman family bought it and undertook some improvements.
One of the most impressive buildings of its kind in the country, the Old Hall has recently been revamped and the public can now explore some areas which were previously closed to them. The whole family can now experience hand-held digital tour guides, a gift shop and cafe.
