14th September, 1962: THE NORTHOLME DEBACLE
GAINSBOROUGH Trinity’s 8-1 home defeat at the hands of Denaby United on Wednesday was the side’s biggest ever on the Northolme, and in fact it was Trinity’s biggest defeat since that debacle at Corby in 1956 when the Gainsborough side - minus goalkeeper George Davey - lost 14-0.
Rarely before can a team wearing the royal blue and white of once-proud Gainsborough Trinity have figured so badly. The whole side played like a bunch of individuals - and individuals too with little idea of what they were supposed to be doing.
The blight even seemed to affect Bob Williams, the club’s “star” signing from Mansfield Town, as his game was reduced to a series of hasty clearances straight to an opponent.
