24th July, 1987: MAGISTRATES ‘ON TRIAL’
MAGISTRATES in Gainsborough found themselves on trial before a bench of angry councillors this week for passing soft sentences on offenders.
Now, members of West Lindsey’s Policy and Resources Committee are requesting special talks with the magistrates over a situation they feel is worrying and distasteful.
The courts came under fire when members were discussing the success of local Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and the possibility of erecting signs to show which areas are covered.
But Coun John Hughes said that although the signs may frighten vandals away, he was concerned about the “very weak sentences” which were being given once they had been caught.
