Concert band in Worksop

The Derby Concert Band are to make their first appearance at Worksops The Crossing.

DERBY Concert Band will make their first appearance at The Crossing in Worksop tomorrow (Saturday) at 7.30pm.

Led by popular musical director Simon Willis, the programme whisks audiences off a Broadway spectacular complete with the band’s vocalists Daniela Hursthouse and Duncan Leech.

Music at The Crossing’s concert programmer compared a concert band with a brass band.

He said: “There’s a world of difference between the sounds these two types of bands make.”

“Imagine adding to brass some woodwind instruments as well as guitars and lower end strings and percussion and placing all that in The Crossing’s excellent musical acoustics.”

The band formed in 1972 and is known for its continued diversity and vibrancy.

Their wide-ranging repertoire includes traditional band ensemble music, film, TV and theatre themes, classics and big band jazz, all produced to a high performance standard.

Their musical director Simon Willis is well known to local audiences from his appearances with Thoresby Colliery Band, in whose junior band he started playing at the age of eight. From being a British Junior Solo Euphonium Champion, his musical career flourished and included an appearance as a percussionist in the hit film Brassed Off.

Following close on the heels of the concert is a performance on 17th November by young concert organist Keith Hearnshaw.

Ticket for concert’s at The Crossing are £8, £7 for concession and £4 for under 16s. They are available from The Crossing or by calling 01909 475421 or emailing info@musicatthecrossing.co.uk.
