Cheap, cheerful and great for kids
Cheap, cheerful and great for kids
Sometimes you just want the kids out of your hair and something cheap, cheerful and simple from a family meal.
And why not not? It's the simplest of pleasures that are often the most rewarding, and perhaps the same could be said for The Woodcocks pub in Burton Waters.
Burton Waters is an idyllic little village, complete with a marina surrounded by luxury housing. Next to the lake, you'll find the vast grounds of The Woodcocks - a huge pub and restaurant with a large outside dining area and a mammoth playground for the kids.
It's plain to see why this pub is so popular with families. The kids' menu is well catered to satisfy the pickiest of tots, and the children's facilities simply can't be beat.
So popular in fact, that when I arrived on what I thought would be a quiet Wednesday evening, the place was brimming with excited young tykes and laughing families.
As a result, the staff were clearly rushed off their feet. As we were briskly served, our waiter was still courteous despite being evidently fatigued. The service left a lot to be desired, but that's fairly understandable under the circumstances.
We were told there was a 45 minute wait on food, so we opted to share a starter. We ordered the hot cheesy nachos, which tasted as if they had been bunged in the microwave. We expected little more, and although it was hardly worth the 2.95 price tag, it kept us going until our mains arrived.
Woodcocks offer a biblically extensive menu. Spoilt for choice, my friend and I made a beeline for the Two For One offer.
I ordered the barbeque chicken, which came with chunky chips and a fairly dismal side salad. All in all, it was a fairly generous portion.
The chicken was succulent, substantial and flavoursome, but most impressively of all the whole thing was hot - a rare feat for pub grub.
My friend went for a steak and ale pie, which came with mushy peas, gravy and chips. I'm told it was tasty enough and that it filled a whole. I suppose you can't really grumble and ask for much more than that if you're paying little more than a fiver per head.
As far as pub food goes it isn't the best, but it isn't bad by any means and you could do much worse. If you're after a cheap, simple family meal where there's something for everyone, then you can't really go wrong with Woodcocks.
