Floods on Lea Road, Gainsborough

WE go back to the devastating floods that plagued Gainsborough in 1947.

The location is Lea Road looking north and the road is out of commission as far as traffic is concerned and the only way to get about is walking on the pavements with several adults and children braving the conditions.

The railway bridge carrying the Cleethorpes-Sheffield railway line can be seen in the distance with Edlingtons factory just beyond that.

The luminous white rings on the tree trunks and telegraoph poles were painted on during the Second World War to enable drivers to spot them during the blackout.
