Chippy is perfect for lunchtime treat
Guardian Gourmet, Shaw's Fish and Chips
My colleague used to work in a chippy and knows a good plate of fish and chips when she sees one.
With this in mind three of us escaped the office on Tuesday lunchtime to get some much needed lunch.
We headed up Bridge Street to Shaw’s Fish and Chips.
The delightful premises on Newgate Street boasts a lovely restaurant area as well as the typical fish and chip takeaway shop alongside it.
We walked in the light and airy restaurant which already had diners in enjoying a lunchtime meal.
The three of us were almost swayed by the special - a mini meal, such as fish and chips, dessert and drink for just £5.99.
But sadly we decided a pudding may be pushing things a step too far, we had an afternoon at Guardian towers to get through after, so we took a look at the menu.
Along with various fish and chips dishes, there were also a variety of kebabs, pies and sausage meals on offer, as well as lighter meals such as sandwiches and jacket potatoes.
I asked about the chicken kebab, but decided against it when I was told it was sliced from a spit. The owner suggested he made me a wrap filled with breaded chicken (£3.99), which was much more to my liking.
My colleagues plumped for mini cod, chips and peas (£3.99).
Our drinks we quickly brought to the table, and our meals weren’t too far behind.
My meal was a pleasant surprise. It was huge, lots of crispy chicken in a delicious herb wrap, along with a generous serving of freshly made chips and salad. It was rounded off perfectly with some mayonnaise and a hot pot of tea.
The other meals were also of equal proportion and definitely set us up for the afternoon.
My colleagues said they were given a generous piece of delicious fish encased in a tasty crispy batter. Again it came with freshly made chips and a covering of mushy peas. One of my colleagues boasted it was some of the best she had ever tasted.
They were both glad they only ordered mini meals, surmising that a regular fish must be more like the size of a whale.
We all cleared our plates, enjoying every mouthful and commenting that we must return more often.
Shaw’s is a wonderful place to pick up some fish and chips as a takeaway or enjoy a sit down meal. What could be better on a cold winter’s day that some traditional fish and chips in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
All that was needed after our lunch was an afternoon nap, but sadly is was back to our desk to write this week’s Guardian.
