Beckingham Gardener’s Club had a good turn-out, including two new members, for their meeting on Monday 20th October. The speaker was Mike Reeve, talking about “Cottage Gardens”. Mike who lives in Sprotborough, is Chairman of the Yorkshire Group of Cottage Gardens and has travelled widely throughout Europe working in many large gardens. Mike took the Garden Club members on a journey, as he converted a garden belonging to a house he had bought, from a pile of rubble, into a lovely cottage garden. Mike illustrated his talk with many slides. Mike’s definition of a cottage gardener is ‘Someone who does not like to see Muck!’
The next speaker meeting will be held on Monday November 17th, when Doug Stewart, Radio Humberside’s Gardening correspondent will be talking about “ Gardening for the Winter Solstice”. Doug believes that: “ Even when the days are at their shortest our gardens can still fill us with joy! Indeed it has been said that if our gardens don’t fill our hearts with joy every day of the year then we have got it all wrong!” In his talk, Doug considers a range of plants that are at their best on the shortest day of the year. This will be a very interesting and entertaining talk so we hope that as many gardeners as possible will join us.
If you are interested in gardening, why not come and check our meetings out? Many of us are novices but we learn a lot from each other as well as our speakers. We are a very friendly and informal club and we try to make everyone feel welcome. At the end of the meeting we have a welcome cup of tea or coffee and biscuits and this gives us the opportunity to chat to each other and share ideas. All meetings are held at 7.30pm in Beckingham Recreation Room.
