Discover Gainsborough history in new book
Sally Outram has written a book titled Gainsborough Through the Times, and held a book signing session at WH Smith, Gainsborough.

Then you’re in luck, as freelance photographer and author Sally Outram has published a new book called ‘Gainsborough Through Time’.
The colourful book is a look at Gainsborough’s fascinating history through the medium of old and new photographs of similar and familiar scenes of the town.
“The tranquil town of Gainsborough hides an exciting past,” she said.
“I’ve always been interested in social history and living in Retford quite close to Gainsborough, I have always been fascinated by the ways that the town has changed over the years and the doversity that has come with it.”
““I started writing the book in April of last year after being asked by Amberley Publishing.”
Sally went on: “This volume, comprising stunning old images and modern colour photographs, takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Gainsborough’s eclectic past and present.”
The book touches on the keystone moments that make Gainsborough such a place of historical significance - from it’s time as the capital of King Alfred’s Mercia, and then as a stronghold of Viking conquerors Sweyn Forkbeard and Canute up until it’s latter day industrial strength ‘making everything from tanks and boilers to fancy dress’.
The Retford-based photographer-turned-historian went along to WH Smiths in Gainsborough to sign copies - and she received some great feedback from local readers.
Sally continued: “People have responded very well to the book. Sales have been great and I’ve had some very good reviews.”
She added: “So much so that Amberley Publishing have extended my contract for another five titles. Now I’m looking into doing the same kind of thing for areas like Bawtry, Doncaster, Tickhill, Worksop, The Dukeries, Arnold, Sherwood and towards the coast in areas like Skegness.”
