Tributes paid to ‘amazing’ Emily
LOVING tributes have been paid to an ‘amazing’ local lady who lived a long colourful life to the incredible age of 106.
Emily Wharton was born in Blyton in 1906 where she lived until she was 104-years-old when she moved in Redcote Nursin Home in Lea, Gainsborough.
She has two sons, two grandchildren and last year welcomed her great-granddaughter into the world.
“She was quite active for her age,” said her son John. “She was gardening up until about two years ago and also loved baking, sewing and knitting. She’d go to church whenever she could too.”
“Most folks liked her and she was quite popular. She couldn’t talk until she was 12-years-old but more than made up for it after that! She made sure that people will remember her.”
Emily worked in Parkinson’s Grocery Store until she married Ted Wharton - a delivery driver for Everett’s fruit and vegetable show down Flag Alley. She also worked the land as a farmgirl during the Second World War.
John added: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to my family, Peter and Jenny, as well as Cliff Bradley and everyone at Redcote Nursing Home.”
When The Standard met Emily on her 105th birthday, she said: “My father always used to say that if you always speak the truth, then you won’t have to tell as many lies to get out of trouble, and I’ve always lived my life by that.”
“I don’t really think about my age - it’s just life and I try to enjoy it and do as much as I can.”
Speaking at her birthday party, Jane Green told The Standard that it was always a pleasure to work at Redcote and see Emily every day.
“She’s just ace,” said Jane. “Emily is so open but realistic and always speaks her mind. - she’s really with it.”
“It’s lovely to have her here. She gets on really well with everyone - but she still does as she likes and doesn’t listen to us!”
Jane continued: “She’s very lively for her age and she doesn’t ail anything - she’s amazing.”
“Emily is one of a kind and there really is no one like her and that’s a fact.”
