Probus Club’s February meetings
NEWS: The Gainsborough Standard
Gainsborough Probus Club’s latest meeting was opened by the chairman Barry Gilyead.
It was decided that the ladies’ lunch will be at the Weston Rooms on 17th April. The chairman then introduced member Laurie Merry, who gave a talk with a slide show on ‘How to Build a Scout HQ on a Shoestring’ - exlpaining how a group of them bought a ‘Prefab’ type building for £200 in 1967.
At the previous PROBUS meeting on 18th February, the speaker was Lieutenant Commander Frank Powell, Royal Navy. After talking about his own career and work on submarines, Frank took the Club through the Gainsborough connections with these amazing machines of the Second World War. His talk ended with the motto: “There are only two types of ships – submarines and targets.”
