Local lady Eileen’s 100th birthday party
A celebration was enjoyed at Foxby Hill Care Home as a popular Gainsborough lady enjoyed her 100th birthday party in style.
Family, friends and staff all gathered to make sure that Margaret Eileen Gorman (or Eileen to her friends) had a special day to remember.
“She had a great day and was tired out by the end of it but she’s been around for a long time,” said her son Jerry. “She’s still got a great memory and doesn’t forget the people who come to see her regularly - she can still even say the alphabet backwards!”
Foxby Hill Care Home nurse Pam Timmons said that Eileen was a pleasure to have around as a resident.
“Her birthday party was great,” said Pam. “I’d say over 30 people from her family came along. She’s very well-loved.”
“Eileen is a lovely lady and quite sweet, but she certainly knows her own mind and can be a bit feisty! But I’d say that’s perfectly acceptable for a 100-year-old.”
Eileen was born in Stewartstown Co Tyrone on 24th February 1913, before moving to England in 1934 where she trained as a nurse at Keighly General Hospital before becoming both a state registered and fevered nurse.
She moved to Gainsborough during the Second World War and worked as a theatre sister at the John Coupland Hospital - lodging with Mr and Mrs Pedge of Morton Terrace.
Eileen then married RAF air gunner Jim Gorman at Gainsborough Parish Church in August 1943. After settling in Gainsborough, Jim went on to work for the East Midlands Gas Board and British Gas before retiring as an Assistant Service Officer age 65 in 1978. He died in 1998. Together, they had two sons - Jeremy (Jerry) and Nigel who both attended Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. Eileen has five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She retired as Assistant Matron of Foxby Hill Hospital in 1973 and lived in Lisstington Road, looking after herself until she was 97-years-old.
