Hemswell care home resident’s tragic death
A VERDICT of accidental death has been recorded after an inquest into the death of a man who died following a fall at a Hemswell Cliff care home.
Robert John Sergeant, 53, died on 3rd August 2012 at Lincoln County Hospital.
The inquest at Lincoln Cathedral Centre last Thursday heard how Mr Sergeant had been at Blenheim Care Centre, on Learoyd Road, since 1995.
His GP explained he had had a ‘traumatic brain injury’ in the past, resulting in learning disabilities, epilepsy, and bouts of depression.
On the evening of 26th July 2012, Mr Sergeant had been given his supper and was sat in his chair in his room listening to the radio. Care staff had checked on him at 9.30pm to give him his medication. But 40 minutes later when they returned to put him to bed, they found him on the floor. The inquest heard how he was ‘unresponsive’ but breathing and had a normal pulse. He also had a cut to his head which was bleeding. Ambulance staff arrived and took him to Lincoln County Hospital where a brain scan revealed he had a large bleed on the brain.
Unfortunately, his condition was such that medical staff decided he would not be a suitable candidate for brain surgery because his chance of survival was low.
Doctors described how Mr Sergeant was kept comfortable and given ‘active treatment’ over the next few days, but his condition was deteriorating. He passed away peacefully on 3rd August.
The family requested that a post mortem was not carried out. And the cause of death was determined to be a bleed on the brain caused by the fall.
Deputy coroner for West Lincolnshire Dick Marshall recorded a verdict of accidental death.
