Revolutionary art was the topic of discussion at an entertaining lecture at the Gainsborough and District Fine Arts Society’s latest meeting and AGM.
The AGM and February meeting of the Fine Arts Society at the Trinity Centre was well attended with Mr Mike Jones elected again as Chairman .
The speaker for the lecture was art historian and researcher David Boyd Haycock - making his first visit to Gainsborough.
As curator of a major exhibition set to open at Dulwich Picture Gallery in June entitled ‘A Crisis of Brilliance’ which will highlight six young ‘rebels in art’, David revealed the story behind their notoriety.
A Fine Arts Society spokesman said: “Just 100 years ago before the onslaught of the First World War, art was experiencing a quite revolutionary moment in history: to name Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, Vorticism.”
“ The ‘six’ firebrand artists involved at the forefront, Bomberg, Carrington, Gertler, Nash, Nevinson and Stanley Spencer came from very differing backgrounds and attended the Slade School of Art between 1908 and 1914 with their teacher of drawing, the demanding Henry Tonks . The Great War shattered everything but was also the making of young students into mature artists who went on to conquer the dynamic world of 20th century art.”
The next meeting is 7th March when the ‘perennially popular’ speaker Mr David Bostwick will talk about ‘The Beste Masters’: Tudor and Stuart Craftsmen. Entry £5.
